If I play two characters onto the field, do I play them one card at a time?

No. The two cards are played simultaneously. If the number of cards you can place onto that line is exceeded by playing either card, place a card other than the cards played by this ability into the removal area before playing it. Then, if the two played cards have [When Played] abilities, resolve them in any order.
